The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

CHAPTER 21
I wouldn't imagine what it would be like to be with the duke and dauphin, always trying to show how smart they are, reciting hamlet or at least pieces of it and mixing it up with other plays. I believe that Twain wants to give us a message which is that society is always trying to prove itself to others. At the time literate people were very few, however whoever had knowledge had power, and in some ways I try to relate that with nowadays, when you say that knowledge is power, today you find knowledge everywhere so is power everywhere?

Trickster Character

Trickster, a person who cheats or deceives people.

Is a trickster character important, what would a story be without a trickster character? The Three Stooges is a comedy performance where the trickster characters always has the ability of changing around situations to their benefit, because of his are powerless nature. In The Three Stooges, Moe would be the trickster character because of his dominant nature even though he isn't tall or strong, he isn't wealthy or powerful however he uses these abilities in order to convince the other characters into doing it or being a part of it.

Slapstick

In class we have discussed different techniques of fake exaggerated violent actions also known as slapstick. We use these techniques in order to give a complete physical display of what is happening in whatever we are performing, some examples are, falling down, punching, and slapping. In our performance we should keep realistic situations as well as realistic actions in order to make it credible. Using different slapstick techniques like slapping, should help us comply to a performance where we are in a realistic situation filled with comedy.

The Three Stooges comedy is based on slapstick and accepting what the other character has laid out. They are constantly having discussions where exaggerated violent actions take place and are the ones that give an end to the discussions.

Fawlty Towers Part 1

In this episode of Fawlty Towers there are many examples of farces. One example that helps me identify this clip as a farce is when Basil is at the hospital and the nurse says, "a doctor is coming." and Basil responds, "My god a doctor, I mean here at the hospital, that means that we can do ti here." because Basil is referring to an improbable situation, which is that his wife might not be operated being in a hospital, which is absurd. Another example is when Basil is at the Hotel and is speaking to his wife on the phone and because of all the things she has asked him to do, he asks her if she would like the entire hotel moved to the a little to right. These were some of the examples that I identified in this clip as being part of a farce.

Anticlimax, a part of our daily life

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rPzq9i83t8

Anticlimax is "a disappointing end to an exciting or impressive series of events ". In this video Lionel Messi has overrun most of the players from the other team, however when it is time to score he misses. I interpret this moment as being an anti-climatic situation because of the amount of intensity, excitement and expectation that is being created around Lionel Messi when he reaches the goalie, until he shoots and misses, which is the disappointing end to the situation or event. After analyzing different anti-climatic situations I realized that they are a constant part of our day to day life, which is when something exciting and impressive has a negative or disappointing result or end.

My Farce

On a casual Monday morning, Henry, a Vietnam war veteran who was disabled, and his good old friend Bratislav, a russian-american who is building the biggest toilet in the world, were walking through the park, when suddenly they find themselves with a little girl who is crying. At first Henry and Bratislav aren't sure what to do, or what to ask, until Bratislav decides to ask the girl,(In a Russian accent) "What is the matter, girl?" and she answered, "I'm lost, I was with my parents, but saw this apple tree and wondered if you stick a straw through this apple would you be able to have a pure apple juice, and as I was investigating my parents left off, now I don't know what to do." Henry came up and said," Don't worry little girl we'll find your parents, do have any idea where they are?"she answered, "Yes, they said we were going to have chicharron at the Mountain restaurant." Henry and Bratislav decided that they would help this girl out and take her to the Mountain restaurant where her parents were. When they told the girl their plan she smiled and said to them, "By the way my name is Katie." Bratislav and Henry introduced themselves and began their journey. Once they got to the mountains peak, Henry asked for the directions of the Mountain Restaurant and was told that the only way he was going to get there was skiing. After some thought Bratislav, Henry and Katie took some skies and took off. Suddenly in the middle of the trip Henry falls into Bratislav's giant toilet, with no special gear to get him out, it would take too long, however little Katie had taken with her one apple branch, which helped to bring henry back up into the surface and continue their journey.

When they where almost there, Bratislav, Henry, and Katie were stopped by a police patrol, who was wondering why two elderly men were skiing with a little seven year old girl. Suspicious about the parent story Henry and Bratislav told the police, then all of a sudden one of the officers decides to detain these men until their story could be proven, but Katie persuades the police officers into believing their story. So the police officers decide to let go Bratislav and Henry under one condition, they would take them to the Mountain Restaurant where Katie's parents were suppose to be.

As soon as they arrived, Katie ran into the restaurant and found her parents, and hugged them like never before. At the end all of them ate chicharron.

Farce?

A comic dramatic work using buffoonery and horseplay and typically including crude characterization and ludicrously improbable situations. Mr. Bean is a comedian known by many, his comedies are based upon situations that wouldn't necessarily occur to us at any point because of our use of reason. The combination of difficult situations and the way he reacts towards these situations are what we find comical, because of its unrealistic content. Mr. Bean comedies are all Farces because they are related to improbable situations becaues of the way reacts upon normal situations, which lead to a complex and different situation from the one he started off. Its all about making something so normal different.

Identifying Hyperbole

In this Simpsons clip, there are constant examples of hyperboles. A Hyperbole is exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. An example of a hyperbole in this clip would be the confederate flag that is on the wall behind Homer, or when he says, " I don't have to be careful I have a gun." Hyperboles are a constantly used in the Simpsons in different ways, personally I would say that its because of the use of hyperboles that we find any humor in the Simpsons at all. Its all about using exaggerations, in order to have a point or make one.
